What is a Registrar?
The Registrar plays a pivotal role in the management and administration of animal records at zoos and aquariums; however, this role and the responsibilities can vary greatly between institutions. Typically, the Registrar is responsible for overseeing the institution’s animal records systems; ensuring data accuracy; maintaining compliance with local, state, federal, and international regulations; and managing animal transactions.
Serving as a key liaison with government agencies, conservation organizations, and accrediting bodies like the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the Registrar facilitates wildlife permitting and coordinates conservation programs. Additionally, they contribute to the development of collections management policies and collaborate closely with curatorial staff to maintain high standards of animal care and to promote a state of inspection readiness for their institution. They are integral to maintaining the integrity of animal records databases, training staff in record-keeping standards, and advocating for best practices in animal information management.
By bridging the administrative and conservation efforts of modern zoological institutions, the Registrar ensures that these facilities operate at the forefront of animal welfare and conservation stewardship.
