Ethics
The Code
The ZRA Code of Professional Ethics (COPE) has been written by and for the members to establish standardized principles for ethical conduct. The COPE presents inspirational guidelines for interpersonal behavior between members within the Association and for how ZRA is represented in our interactions with other organizations. The COPE is also written for the protection of freedom of speech and to recognize the importance of respect for each other, for equal justice and the pursuit of truth.
There are two main parts of the COPE. One part is the Mandatory Standards, which are, basically:
- Members cannot knowingly violate any laws that relate to our profession
- Members must cooperate with government agencies that regulate animal welfare or transport
- Members should avoid conduct that adversely affects ZRA’s mission, vision, or values
- Members will not try to get others to violate a Mandatory Standard and may not help anyone trying to violate a Mandatory Standard.
Violating a Mandatory Standard may result in disciplinary action.
In addition to Mandatory Standards, the COPE sets out the Obligations of Professional Ethics. These are a set of guidelines to encourage ethical behavior, and they state:
As a member of ZRA, I will strive to ensure that the professionalism of the organization and the following principles, concepts and ideals are upheld:
- Display the highest integrity and use my professional skills, experience and knowledge to the best interests of all.
- Deal fairly with others in the dissemination of professional information and advice.
- Create and maintain accurate records and ensure that the information reflects the true facts insofar as they are known.
- Act cooperatively and constructively with colleagues in the furtherance of my institution’s and ZRA’s goals and objectives.
- Maintain the highest standards of personal, professional and business conduct and behavior.
- Aid the professional development of those who enter the registrar position in a zoological facility by assisting them to understand the functions, duties, and responsibilities of the profession.
- Report to the Ethics Committee any known or suspected violation of the COPE.
